Public Outreach on the Family Code, Domestic Violence, and Judicial Reform

The Bahrain Women's Union (BWU) has been conducting awareness-raising sessions on the Family Law, domestic violence, and judicial reform. These sessions have been open to the public and have been held in cities and villages throughout Bahrain.

In October and December 2009, the BWU and Freedom House organized awareness-raising sessions on the Family Code and judicial reform in Bahrain. The Head of the Higher Sunni Shari'a Court highlighted a number of recent developments, including changes in how judges are selected and trained, as well as the separation of the roles of the judge and that of "Ma'thoun" (authorized priest). The session also focused on the recently enacted Sunni part of the Family Law, including the positive impact it has had for women and families. It also covered the weaknesses of the law. In November 2009, the BWU held a session to discuss domestic violence and resources that are available to victims of violence. One such program is the BWU's Legal Advocacy Committee, which provides legal, social, and psychological support services.
